The reason for oiling the inside of the gutters is to keep the wood supple and protect it from drying out in harsh dry summer climates. Clean your wooden gutters every 6 months or as needed especially if you live under pine trees. I thought raw was the preferred type but the 4 quarts of boiled sitting on the shelf left over from a garage cleanout many moons ago have got me confused. Wait for a day or 2 before moving on this step.

These oils dry leaving a protective film on the wood surface. Do a final rinse on the wooden gutters with the garden house. The largest part of maintaining gutters is keeping them clean. If you regularly clean your gutters unboiled linseed oil will last as long as cuprinol clear.

Step 5 rinse. Finally be sure to clean out your gutters at least once a year. It creates a seal that prevents moisture from getting trapped in the wood while creating a barrier that keeps rain water out. As if that wasn t enough it is also used in soaps inks and in the production of linoleum.

Avoid linseed and tung oil though. When raw oil is applied to wood it stays wet. Allow water to run through the gutter while visually examining the flow. Linseed oil extracted from flax seed is one of the most useful natural oils.

Others believe that it is best to avoid linseed oil and instead use something like motor oil or mineral oil. Never use a drying oil such as linseed oil or tung oil. Keep the gutter draining properly and downspouts clear of debris as well. Instead keep the inside of your gutter well oiled with shingle oil a light motor oil or mineral oil.

Most would suggest that you use a thin layer of the traditionally used linseed oil for this purpose. Also it is cheap and easy to apply. These oils dry to form a protective surface that will eventually break down and trap water underneath causing irreparable damage. It is used as a preservative for wood concrete and an ingredient in paints varnishes and stains.
